As a passing and trading area, the border is also a place of trafficking. The Col du Pourtalet used to be this particular trade zone, a long, very long time ago before the abolition of border controls on people and goods. Obviously, the smuggler’s discretion prevented from taking a census report of these practices.

Today evocations still remain. The evocation « the smugglers’ crossing » makes reference to a walk well-known by the Pyrenees hikers between the Soques stone, on the Northern slope of the Col, and the Sarra lake, on the borders of the village of Sallent. The evocation makes also reference to the vissicitudes of History. The Spanish republicans running away from the Francoist government, Jewish or rebels trying to escape from occupied France, had also no other option that taking the smugglers’ discret paths… The Hotel was the witness of nothing ; the Border was the theater of everything. May this room offer you the quietness of the smugglers’ night crossings…
